Plans to set up Belarus-Romania university consortium

MINSK, 26 December (BelTA) – Plans to found a Belarusian-Romanian university consortium were discussed during the visit of Belarusian Ambassador to Romania Andrei Grinkevich to Brasov, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Embassy in Romania.

Andrei Grinkevich and rector of Belarusian State Technological University Igor Voitov visited the Transilvania University of Brasov, one of Romania’s major public higher education institutions. During a meeting with the university administration, they discussed the possibility of setting up a Belarus-Romania university consortium to develop cooperation in every field and open up new prospects for interaction between Belarusian and Romanian higher education institutions.

Four Belarusian universities established cooperation with Transilvania University in 2017. Three agreements were signed on interaction in a wide range of matters such as student exchange and joint participation in international olympiads and competitions.

Andrei Grinkevich also had several meetings on further bilateral cooperation in Brasov. A number of top-priority avenues of cooperation were outlined together with the Romanian colleagues. They include the interaction between regions, promotion of Belarus’ exports, investment attraction, establishment of joint ventures, cooperation in science, education, and culture.

The sides also mapped out some specific short-term and mid-term joint measures, including joint visits at the regional level, participation in tenders, and setting up branch offices of separate Belarusian companies in Romania.

Brasov is a large Romanian industrial center. Industrial output accounts for 48% of the city’s economy. Some big Western investors have come to the local chemical, automotive, forestry, and wood processing industry.

In January-October 2017, Romania was the seventh largest EU importer of goods from Belarus.
