GRODNO, 19 April (BelTA) – Grodno has plans to implement a project to restore the waterway connecting the Belarusian city with Lithuania’s Kaunas jointly with Lithuanian partners, BelTA learned from Grodno Mayor Mechislav Goi.
The plans for the project were discussed during a meeting between Grodno authorities and representatives of six Lithuanian cities. The Lithuanian partners show great interest in the project. The idea is to build an international waterway along the Neman river, which will contribute to the creation and promotion of cross-border tourism products. Besides, this will help establish connection with Poland via the Augustow Canal. The cost of the project is estimated at €6 million.
To implement the project, it will be necessary to upgrade the Belarusian part of the border outpost. Today there is only a concrete platform there. On the Lithuanian side of the borer, it will be necessary to increase the depth of the waterway on an 18km section. From Grodno to the border with Lithuania, the river is deep enough for navigation. Plans have also been made to buy one to three carrying vessels once the project is completed.
Stakeholders will discuss the prospects of the project and sign a memorandum in May. There are plans to implement the project with the help of international technical assistance.
