Pinsk to host Belarus-Ukraine organic farming seminar

BREST, 27 June (BelTA) – A seminar on organic farming will be held in Pinsk on 27-28 June as part of the project “Formation of the business environment for organic berry cultivation in cross-border regions of Ukraine and Belarus”, BelTA learned from the project manager, Head of the Department of Economics and Business at the Polessky State University Lyudmila Sovik.

This project is implemented within the framework of the Eastern Partnership Territorial Cooperation Support Program (EaPTC). It was launched in December 2017 and is set to run 14 months. To implement the project, the European Union granted about €160,000. The overall objective of the project is to help SMEs develop organic farming in the cross-border areas of Belarus and Ukraine. The partner of the Polessky State University is the National University of Water and Environmental Engineering from Rovno.

“The university has developed serious competencies in growing planting stock, while our Ukrainian partners have good expertise and knowledge in the field of organic farming. We would like to unite efforts to achieve the common goals. This will be the first meeting of this kind. We will delegate experts and farmers who have been doing organic farming for quite a long time. They will speak at the meeting and forge new contacts,” the project manager informed.

The meeting will be hosted by the Polessky State University. Taking part in it will be 15 heads of private farms from Belarus and Ukraine each. Belarus’ delegation will include farmers from Stolin District, Gantsevichi District, Luninets District and Pinsk District. The experts will include head of the certified organic farming enterprise SidSad from Logoisk District Elena Sidorova and a representative of the certified company Organic Standard from Kiev.

The participants of the meeting will tour the farming enterprise Berkley in Brest District that specializes in bog bilberry cultivation. On 4 July the Belarusian farmers will tour an organic plantation in Ukraine.
