MINSK, 21 January (BelTA) – A total of 531 Belarusians are now over 100 years old, BelTA learnt from the Labor and Social Security Ministry.
The national figures suggest women are outnumbering men when it comes to reaching milestone birthdays, with 464 out of 531 being females.
According to specialists, as of 1 January 2016, five Belarusians were aged 110 or over. Two of them, the residents of Grodno and Minsk Oblasts, are 115 years old and over. They were born at the start of the previous century.
Grodno Oblast leads in the number of centenarians in the country. As of 1 January 2016 there were 106 people over the age of 100 in the oblast. Minsk Oblast with 94 centenarians goes second in this gerontological rating. Third is Minsk with 74 people who celebrated their 100th birthday. A total of 70 centenarians live in Brest Oblast, 69 – in Gomel Oblast, 65 – in Vitebsk Oblast and 53 – in Mogilev Oblast.
