MINSK, 11 March (BelTA) – An exhibition “Kazimir Malevich and the 21st Century” will be running as part of the international project “European Games- European Art” at the National Center for Contemporary Arts on 11 June – 1 September, Director of the center Sergei Krishtapovich said at a press conference on 11 March, BelTA has learned.
The exposition will feature about 30 works by Belarusian artists who follow in the footsteps of Kazimir Malevich.
“In the 1920s, Belarus, in particular Vitebsk, became the cradle of the 20th-century avant-garde in the traditional understanding of the word. It was here where Malevich set up the UNOVIS group that explored and developed new concepts in art. This group had a considerable impact on the development of Western European art. The Soviet avant-garde changed the history of the 20th-century art. Creative and theoretical legacy of avant-garde artists from Vitebsk, Minsk and Belarusian small towns of the early 20th century went down in the history of art. This legacy keeps inspiring painters, graphic artists, designers, architects and art critics all over the world,” the director of the center said.
The exhibition is expected to showcase a work that is attributed to Kazimir Malevich. The painting Man with A Shovel from the collection of the Grodno State History and Archeology Museum is dated around 1920.
The exhibition will also feature authentic works of arts and crafts, like traditional embroidered towels, clothing and household items as sculptural objects.
The international project “European Games- European Art” will be held from April till 1 September. Applications are accepted till 22 April, works till 15 May.
The project is run by the National Center for Contemporary Arts, the Belarusian Union of Artists and the Belarusian Union of Designers with support of the Belarusian Culture Ministry.
