MINSK, 17 January (BelTA) - Belarus’ Max Mirnyi and Philipp Oswald of Austria went off to a good start at the Australian Open men’s doubles event, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian-Austrian duo beat the Italian-Israeli tandem of Thomas Fabbiano and Dudi Sela 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) in the opener. Andrei Vasilevsky of Belarus and Hans Podlipnik Castillo of Chile will play the Argentinean duet of Guido Pella and Diego Schwartzman.
In the women’s doubles event opener Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus and Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova lost to Sorana Cirstea of Romania and Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil 2-6, 2-6.
World number 56 Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus will face will face Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia (World No.30) in the second round on 18 January. In the opener the Belarusian beat Christina McHale of the United States (World No.73) 6-3, 6-2.
