MINSK, 27 March (BelTA) – Minsk is preparing to bid to host the 2022 FIDE World Chess Olympiad, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Sports and Tourism Ministry.
The Belarusian Chess Federation is expected to put forward its bid during a session of the FIDE Presidential Board in Minsk on 7 April.
“We have had such an idea for a long time. We would like to host the chess Olympiad in Minsk, a large-scale competition that brings together the best of the best. We believe we have accumulated necessary experience and know what to do for the organization of such competitions. Together with the support of the Sports and Tourism Ministry and the city authorities we will put forward such an initiative,” said Chairperson of the Belarusian Chess Federation Anastasiya Sorokina.
The head of the Belarusian Chess Federation and Deputy Chairman of the organization Nikolai Zarubitsky are on a visit to Batumi to attend the meeting of the Council of the European Chess Union.
President of the European Chess Union Zurab Azmaiparashvili thanked Belarus for its readiness to host the World Chess Olympiad and promised to support the Belarusian bid.
The decision on the 2022 World Chess Olympiad venue will be taken at the FIDE Congress in Batumi in September 2018.
