MINSK, 8 October (BelTA) – World chess champion Maia Chiburdanidze has been named Goodwill Ambassador for the 2022 World Chess Olympiad in Minsk, BelTA learned from the Twitter account of the Belarusian Sport and Tourism Ministry.
“World Chess Champion, nine-time winner of chess Olympiads Maia Chiburdanidze has agreed to be Goodwill Ambassador for the World Chess Olympiad that will take place in Minsk in 2022,” the ministry said.
As BelTA informed earlier, Belarus will host the 2022 World Chess Olympiad. The decision was taken at the FIDE General Assembly in Batumi. Belarus’ bid was supported by the majority of the General Assembly participants. Belarus won the right to host the tournament over South Korea and Tunisia. Belarus’ Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk guaranteed the World Chess Federation the organization of the Olympiad in compliance with all the necessary requirements.
