MINSK, 28 April (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number two Aryna Sabalenka went off to a good start at the Madrid Open defeating world number 44 Sorana Cirstea of Romania, 6-4, 6-3, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian will next face world number 115 Camila Osorio of Colombia. In 2021 Aryna Sabalenka won the tournament in Madrid.
On 26 April, Belarus’ world number 47 Aliaksandra Sasnovich won a close two-setter, 6-4, 7-5, over world number 1,088 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine in the first round of the Mutua Madrid Open. The Belarusian will next play world number 24 Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic. Belarus’ world number 16 Victoria Azarenka will open her Madrid campaign against world number 54 Alycia Parks of the United States. In 2011 and 2012 Victoria Azarenka reached the Madrid Open finals but lost both times. In the doubles opener Victoria Azarenka and Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia saw off Desirae Krawczyk of the United States and Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7.
This year the tournament in Madrid will be over on 7 May.
