Lida named Belarus’ Capital of Culture 2020

MINSK, 26 April (BelTA) – Lida has been declared Belarus’ Capital of Culture 2020, BelTA learned from the website of the Belarusian Culture Ministry.

The Culture Ministry and its partners have held the nationwide campaign “The Capital of Culture of Belarus” since 2010. Every host city implements innovative projects to display its cultural identity, develop and popularize the traditions and achievements of the national culture, revitalize creative enterprise, and increase tourism attractiveness. The main aim of the campaign is to showcase the best national cultural achievements to Belarusians, to attract home and foreign tourists.

Polotsk became the first Capital of Culture of Belarus in 2010. Gomel took over as the Capital of Culture in 2011, Nesvizh in 2012, Mogilev in 2013, Grodno in 2014, Brest in 2015, Molodechno in 2016, Bobruisk in 2017, Novopolotsk in 2018. Pinsk is the Capital of Culture 2019. The Culture Ministry board has decided to award the Capital of Culture of Belarus 2020 status to Lida.

Lida is the second largest city in Grodno Oblast, one of Belarus’ cultural and industry centers. Its visiting card is the 14th century Lida Castle.

There are seven cultural institutions in Lida as well as 36 amateur art groups with the titles people's and exemplary, two of which have the title “Honored Amateur Collective of the Republic of Belarus”.

Lida hosts over 3,000 cultural events annually. Some of regional and city celebrations and contests have become quite well-known. For example, the Christmas Festival in Lida Castle, the Medieval culture festival The Sword of Lida Castle, LVenok national children’s art festival-competition, The Bird regional jazz and pop festival-competition, Crystal Shoe children’s amateur choreography contest, Star Rain children’s vocal contest, and others.
