MINSK, 31 October (BelTA) – Belarus’ Iryna Kurachkina clinched the women’s 55kg bronze at the 2024 Senior World Wrestling Championships – non-Olympic weight categories - in Tirana, Albania, BelTA has learned.
On her way to the podium the Belarusian defeated Russia’ Olga Khoroshavtseva, Nina Hemmer of Germany, and Ukraine’s Oleksandra Khomenets. In the semifinal Iryna Kurachkina lost to Japan’s Moe Kiyooka. In the bronze-medal bout the Belarusian beat Ramona Galambos of Hungary 5-3.
Iryna Kurachkina won two bronze medals at the World Wrestling Championships in 2017 and 2019, silver at the 2020 Olympic Games and three gold medals at the European Wrestling Championships in 2018, 2021, 2024.
Competing in the women’s wrestling event in Albania were two more Belarusian athletes – Veranika Ivanova (65kg) and Anastasiya Zimiankova (72kg). Both were out in the opening bouts. The freestyle wrestling event featured Aryan Tsiutryn (61kg), Niurgun Skriabin (70kg), Mikalai Savenka (79kg), and Yaraslau Iadkouski (92kg). None of them managed to reach the quarterfinal stage.
