MINSK, 20 February (BelTA) – The 24th International Category A Sambo Tournament for the Prizes of the President of Belarus is kicking off at the Minsk Sports Palace on 20 February, BelTA has learned.
Competing for medals will be athletes from 22 countries. Minsk will host sambo wrestlers from Angola for the first time. Belarus will field about 60 athletes. The solemn opening ceremony will start at 17:00, while the final of the tournament is set to begin at 17:30.
Head coach of the Belarusian national sambo team Dmitry Bazylev is confident that Belarusian wrestlers will have a strong performance, which will be a good start to the season.
The Belarus President’s Sports Club has instituted special prizes for the tournament.
The competitions are organized by the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), the Sports and Tourism Ministry, the President's Sports Club, the Minsk City Hall, the National Olympic Committee, and the Belarusian Sambo Federation.
The entrance is free.
The tournament will wrap up on 21 February.
In 2019 Belarusian sambo wrestlers won 23 medals (7 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze medals) at the International Category A Sambo Tournament in Minsk.
