Helmets, heraldic flags dating back to 11th-17th centuries on display in Gomel
GOMEL, 18 December (BelTA) – An exhibition of battle helmets, heraldic flags dating back to the 11th-17th centuries has opened at the museum of the Gomel Palace and Park Ensemble on 18 December, BelTA learned from the museum.
The exhibition traces the evolution of arms manufacture on the territory of present-day Belarus. It invites its visitors to get immersed in medieval atmosphere and see replicas of almost all types of helmets that the ancestors of modern Belarusians and their enemies wore. All the exhibits have been made by a group of craftsmen based in Minsk.
The exhibition has been organized to mark the 500th anniversary of the Radziwill family. The central piece on display is the presumably lost helmet from the armor suit of Mikolaj Krzysztof Radziwill Czarny. The suit was made by Kunz Lochner, Nuremberg’s most celebrated armorer of that period, in 1555. The helmet is adorned with sophisticated patterns and enameled in white, red, and black with gilding.
The exhibition will run until 28 February 2016.
