MINSK, 11 April (BelTA) – Moscow hosted the first award ceremony of the Segalovich Scientific Award which aims to reward contribution to the development of computer sciences. One of the award winners was Pavel Goncharov, a student of Gomel Sukhoi State Technical University, BelTA learned from the Yandex press service.
The contest received over 260 applications from Belarus, Russia, and Kazakhstan. The award was granted for research in machine learning, computer vision, information search and data analysis, processing of natural languages and machine translation, speech recognition and reproduction. The award was granted to 13 winners: nine young researchers – students and post-graduate students, and four scientific advisors. Pavel Goncharov from Belarus won the Young Researchers nomination.
The Belarusian student was awarded for achievements in machine learning and computer vision. Pavel Goncharov is working on ways to recognize plant diseases via pictures, to reconstruct elementary particles trajectory, he also studies machine learning in physics and deep learning.
The award for young researchers amounts to RUB350,000 (Br11,500), and for scientific advisors to RUB700,000. The sum will be paid in stages. Students and post-graduate students will have an opportunity to take part in an international conference on artificial intelligence and undergo an internship at Yandex.
“The aim of the award is to support researchers who work in computer sciences. We value not only research that can be applied in practice right now but also developments which may prove important in the future. We hope that the award will promote interest in science and that we will get more and more promising applications every year, also from Belarus,” Yandex Regional Head Yegor Tsyganok noted.
