MINSK, 11 May (BelTA) – Belarusian athletes clinched gold and silver medals at the 2016 European Rowing Championships which took place Brandenburg, Germany, BelTA has learned.
In the women’s C2 final Tatyana Kukhta and Yulia Bichik of Belarus battled difficult headwind conditions to finish first in 8:25.810. Second was Germany (8:28.300), with the Czech Republic in the third place (8:31.940).
Silver of the continental sport forum went to Belarus’ coxless four of Vadim Lyalin, Denis Migal, Nikolai Sharlap and Igor Pashevich who clocked 6:20.910. Gold was claimed by the UK (6:18.930). Third was France in 6:21.550.
Many-year leader of the Belarusian women’s national team Yekaterina Karsten finished fourth in the single sculls with the time of 9:46.080. Magdalena Lobnig of Austria won the women’s event in 9:22.320. The holder of the Olympic berth for the event will be announced after the qualifying regatta in Lucerne on 22-24 May.
In the men’s 8 event Germany showed the best result, with Russia finishing second. Bronze was decided between Belarus and the UK by a photofinish. The British team got the third place only thanks to a better time in the preliminary heat.
Belarus finishes fifth in the medal table. The UK ranked first.
