BREST, 22 June (BelTA) – Numerous delegations from Russia, Ukraine and Slovakia are taking part in the events to mark the Day of Remembrance of the victims of the Great Patriotic War in Brest on 22 June, BelTA has learned.

Twenty-two official delegations have arrived in Brest. Among them are representatives of Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Penza, Smolensk, Kiev, Vranov nad Toplou. The delegations comprise war veterans, young people, and members of public organizations. The guests attended a commemoration event at the Ceremonial Square to mark the 76^th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War and watched a historical reenactment of the defense of the Brest Fortress.

A delegation of the Russian sister city Izhevsk arrived in Brest ahead of the event. The delegation consists mostly of cadets. “Our major goal is to show young people the importance of preserving the memory of the past events. We all need peace and chidden are its successors,” stressed Lyudmila Kovalevskaya, the director of the trade and business center Belarus in Izhevsk. The Russian cadets were taken on a tour around the city and the Brest Fortress. They took part in the Memory Watch events and saw a historical reenactment of the fortress defense. “We are grateful to the Brest authorities for such an interesting program,” said the guest.

A big delegation has also arrived from Smolensk. The delegation comprised war and labor veterans, war children. “On Day of Remembrance we are visiting the cities that held the first attacks of the Nazis. We marked 22 June in Sevastopol last year. This time we have come to Brest. We are overwhelmed with feelings and emotions. What we can see here shows that Belarus remembers and honors the memory of its heroes, and will never forget them,” Chairman of the Smolensk Council of Veterans Valery Kuznetsov said.
