MINSK, 3 June (BelTA) – A bust of Mahatma Gandhi has been unveiled near the Belarusian State University (BSU). Attending the ceremony was India President Pranab Mukherjee, BelTA has learned.
Thus the BSU has started a project to create a gallery to commemorate famous people who contributed to the political and scientific development of the world.
“This is a landmark event for our university and the Belarusian system of education. Today we have opened a monument to the great Indian enlightener who launched the national liberation movement and led India to independence,” Belarusian Education Minister Mikhail Zhuravkov said during the unveiling ceremony. He added that the BSU teaches its students to follow international standards and take a wise approach to international relations.
India President Pranab Mukherjee is currently on an official visit in Belarus. He already met with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko and said that India seeks closer cooperation with Belarus. He also stated that India will always support Belarus’ sovereignty and independence.
The diplomatic relations between Belarus and India were established in 1992. Both countries have embassies in each other's capitals. Alexander Lukashenko paid state visits to India in 1997 and 2007. The India President came to Belarus for the first time.
