MINSK, 20 May (BelTA) – Viktoria Belanovskaya of Belarus (-62kg weight category) has claimed bronze at the World Taekwondo Championships in Chelyabinsk, Russia, BelTA has learned.
On her way to the podium the Belarusian beat representatives of Vietnam (11-6), Australia (11-5), Germany (9-6), and Egypt (8-7). In the semifinal Viktoria Belanovskaya lost to Turkey’s Irem Yaman, the winner of the championships, 0-9.
Belanovskaya’s bronze is Belarus’ highest achievement at the tournament. Fellow Belarusians Darya Zubovich (-57kg), Vladislav Savlukov (-80kg), Konstantin Yermak (-87kg) and Arman Silla (over 80kg) finished 9th.
The Belarusian men’s team placed 17th overall with the total of 22 points. The Belarusian women’s team finished 29th with 10 points in total.
South Korea topped the team overall standings with four gold and one bronze medals. Second was Iran with three gold and two bronze medals. Turkey placed third with two gold, one silver and one bronze medals. Belarus finished 14th with one bronze.
