Brest welcomes first fans heading for FIFA World Cup in Russia

BREST, 7 June (BelTA) – Belarus welcomed the first fans who traveled via Brest to Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup without visas, Sergei Dmitriev, a senior officer of the information and propaganda department of the Brest border group, told BelTA.

The first fan, an Australian citizen, entered Belarus from Europe by train on 4 June. Three more fans from Switzerland, Poland and the UK crossed the Belarusian border in Brest on 5 and 6 June.

“The foreign nationals crossed the border smoothly. In the area of our responsibility foreign travelers can cross the Belarusian border without visas upon presentation of Fan ID through the border checkpoints “Peschatka” and “Domachevo”, and the road and railway checkpoints “Brest”.  We expect an inflow of football fans next week,” sergei Dmitriev said.

As BelTA reported earlier, on 29 May Belarus and Russia signed an intergovernmental agreement on certain issues related to the rules of entry of foreign nationals and stateless persons attending international sport events. In line with the document foreign fans will be able to travel through Belarus visa-free during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia from 4 June to 25 July. Russia, in turn, will introduce visa-free entry and stay on its territory for foreign fans attending the 2nd European Games MINSK 2019.
