BREST, 2 May (BelTA) – The Brest Hero Fortress memorial complex has welcomed its 24-millionth visitor, BelTA has learned.
The 24-millionth guest visited the fortress in April. It was a tourist as part of a group from the hero cities of Moscow and Sevastopol. The tourist was handed a certificate and souvenirs as a present. An excursion was held for the Russian group of tourists around the memorial.
The Brest Fortress began the official count of tourist visits on 8 November 1956 when the museum of defense was opened. At that time two halls housed just 13 photos. Back then the fortress had over 60,000 visitors per year. As of today the memorial has had visitors from 140 countries. Today the fortress welcomes more than 420,000 people, 8,000 organized groups of tourists and holds more than 300 cultural and educational activities annually.
