BREST, 11 December (BelTA) - Brest Fortress will set up three new exposition halls with the financial assistance of the Belarus-Russia Union State, BelTA learned from Director of the Brest Fortress Memorial Complex Grigory Bysuk.
The Union State plans to earmark RUB319.2 million to implement 16 activities listed in the the project “Overhaul, restoration and preservation of the Brest Fortress structures” in 2018-2020. For example, the financial assistance will be directed to finance the development of design specifications and estimates, repair and restoration works on the objects of the fortress, conservation of the ruins and ensuring safe access to the citadel (the Central Island).
“After the renovations we are set to open three independent museum exposition halls. These include the expositions in the half-tower of the southeast barracks, which will focus on the history of Brest Fortress, and in the Eastern and Fifth Forts. We hope that the new exposition halls will attract more visitors,” Grigory Bysuk noted.
The funds will be allocated to complete the repair and conservation of the ruins of the barracks of the 333rd infantry regiment, major overhaul of the bridge over the Mukhavets River near the Defense Museum, the roofs of the Southern and Southwestern barracks. Plans have been also made to develop the design specifications and estimates, and to repair and conserve the ruins of the White Palace, the engineering building, ruins near the Kholm Gate.
Soon Brest Fortress will open a new museum exhibition. The project was funded by OAO Gazprom Transgaz Belarus and with the help of budgetary funds. The exhibition in the powder cellar will open on 22 December. Visitors will be able to see the recreation center of the 98th anti-tank artillery division as it was in 1939-1941.
“We open new episodes of the history of Brest Fortress for visitors. Guests can walk through the exhibition halls, cellars. In my opinion, it is quite interesting,” Grigory Bysuk said.
Brest Fortress is included in the list of popular tourist sites in Belarus. Since the beginning of the year, the legendary citadel has welcomed over 350,000 visitors.
