BelTA’s war photo exhibition opens in Vienna Liberation Museum

MINSK, 1 July (BelTA) - BelTA’s photo exhibitionBelarus Remembers. 75 Moments of War” opened in Vienna in the run-up to the Independence Day of Belarus. The organizer is the Belarusian Embassy in Austria.

“On 1 July, in the run-up to Independence Day, the Belarusian Embassy in Austria organized an exhibition of the photos from the Belarusian Telegraph Agency BelTA ‘Belarus Remembers. 75 Moments of War’. The exhibition is centered on the photos made by BelTA’s war photojournalist Vladimir Lupeiko,” the embassy said.

The exhibition presents 75 unique photos depicting the front-line everyday life, the partisans, the work in the rear, the liberation of Belarus, the restoration of the country from the ruins.

The opening ceremony was attended by members of the parliament, representatives of the foreign ministry, federal and regional government bodies, business, scientific and cultural communities, Austrian media, heads and staff of diplomatic missions accredited in Vienna, and Belarusian compatriots.

Charge d'Affaires of Belarus in Austria Andrei Lozovik stressed that the memory of the fallen for the freedom and independence of the Motherland, gratitude for their feat, understanding of the significance of the Great Victory remain the most important spiritual value, the factor that unites all Belarusian citizens.

Andrei Lozovik wished Happy Independence Day to his compatriots living in Austria and thanked them for their efforts to drum up interest in Belarus, its history and culture, and strengthen Belarusian-Austrian ties.

Deputy head of the ninth district of Vienna Monika Kreutz stressed that Belarus holds the memory of the war sacred. The country paid for the Victory with lives of a third of its population, destroyed cities, and wrecked economy. “Belarusians have every right to be proud of their country’s contribution to the victory over Nazism. We are deeply honored to demonstrate the Belarusian exhibition in the halls of the Vienna Liberation Museum. The exhibition fully fits in with the general concept of the museum – telling the present generations about the history of the war and promoting the idea that the horrors of Nazism must not happen again,” she said.

The event also presented The Destinies Folded in Triangle, a joint project of BelTA and the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War featuring the letters of soldiers from the holdings of the museum. The participants of the event took great interest in unique photos depicting the dramatic moments of the war and videos.

Belarusian violinist and singer Yulia Lebedenko, who resides in Vienna, performed famous pieces by Belarusian composers at the event.

The exhibition will be on show in Vienna till 19 July.

The Vienna Liberation Museum was set up at the site of a civil defense bunker in the ninth district of the Austrian capital that dates back to World War II. The bunker is now home to an exhibition dedicated to the events of April 1945, when Austria restored its freedom and independence.
