MINSK, 30 April (BelTA) – The Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus (FTUB) has abandoned plans to stage outdoor rallies timed to Labor Day on 1 May, FTUB Chairman Mikhail Orda told BelTA.
The official said: “We are going to celebrate Labor Day in an unusual format this year. In the current situation we’ve made the only right decision for us: we’ve decided not to organize traditional outdoor mass events timed to Labor Day.”
In his words, Labor Day is all about showing the solidarity of the working people. But in today’s situation it is necessary to show solidarity in a different manner: by working together to fight the spread of the pandemic instead of arranging loud festivities and concerts packed with people.
The Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus has taken a number of steps in this regard. The federation no longer spends money on non-essential needs. The money is instead spent on buying means of protection and disinfectants for workers of various enterprises. The trade unions have set up mutual assistance funds to offer financial help to the workers, who need it most due to the complicated situation at the enterprise. About Br5 million has been spent on the purpose since early April.
