MINSK, 28 June (BelTA) – Belarusian State University has been ranked 401-500 (Physics category) in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2017 compiled by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, BelTA learned from the university’s press service.
This is the first time a Belarusian university has been included in the ARWU.
This release contains rankings of universities in 52 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. In total, more than 4,000 universities were ranked, 1,409 out of them were included in the final ranking, among them 12 Russian and a Belarusian university.
The ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Reuters, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university.
The Russian universities that have made it to the top 500 are Moscow State University, Saint Petersburg State University, Tomsk State University, Novosibirsk State University, Tomsk Polytechnic University, Higher School of Economics, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, National University of Science and Technology MISiS, and Saint Petersburg State Polytechnical University. Moscow State Institute was ranked highest among Russian universities (43).
Belarusian State University tends to be named among the world’s best universities in other rankings, too.
