MINSK, 30 November (BelTA) – The Belarusian Memorial Chapel in London was voted world’s best religion building at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) running in Amsterdam on 28-30 November, BelTA learned from the Facebook page of the London architectural bureau Spheron Architects, the authors of the project.
The shortlist included religious buildings in India, Turkey, Thailand, Portugal, Iran, Australia and Singapore. The Belarusian Memorial Chapel has been also nominated for the WAF prize “Best Use of Certified Timber” in completed buildings.
The church bearing the name of the Holy Hierarch Cyril of Turau and All the Patron Saints of the Belarusian People was built in London in 2016 as a memorial to the Chernobyl victims. It is located opposite the Belarusian Library and Francysk Skaryna Museum founded by Belarusian Uniate priests. The church operates an energy-saving heating system, has a special walkway for people in wheelchairs.
