MINSK, 12 February (BelTA) – Belarusian athletes won 843 medals, including 248 gold, 277 silver, and 318 bronze, of them 359 in Olympic sports, at the 2nd European Games, championships, cups, world and European championships in 2019, Belarus’ Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk said as he spoke at the ministry’s board meeting, BelTA has learned.
Over half of the medals were won by junior teams.
During the current Olympic cycle a number of promising athletes confidently made it to the national teams and already scored high results at major international competitions. These include Alena Nozdrava and Nadezhda Makarchenko (canoe and kayak), Karyna Demidik, Elvira Herman and Maksim Nedasekau (athletics), Anastasia Shkurdai (swimming), Ivan Litvinovich (trampolining), Anastasiya Alistratava (artistic gymnastics), Alina Harnasko and Anastasiia Salos (rhythmic gymnastics), Vasilina Khandoshka (synchronized swimming), Mariya Martynova (shooting), Karyna Kazlouskaya (archery), Aryna Sabalenka (tennis), Yauheni Tsikhantsou and Eduard Ziaziulin (weightlifting),” Sergei Kovalchuk said.
The 2nd European Games were the main sporting event of 2019. The Belarusian athletes won 68 medals: 23 gold, 16 silver and 29 bronze. Belarus placed second in the informal overall medal standings.
Belarusian athletes won 109 medals at the world championships, including 30 in Olympic sports, 10 in the Olympic disciplines and 9 medals in the disciplines of the Summer Olympic Games program.
Belarus won 13 medals in 2015 (similar year on the Olympic cycle) and 5 in 2018.
Belarusians picked up 125 medals at European championships, including 46 in the Olympic sports, 19 in the Olympic disciplines. Belarusian athletes took 20 medals in the Olympic disciplines in 2018.
