MINSK, 8 September (BelTA) – The Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka has won the tennis tournament U.S. Open for the first time. It is her third title at the Grand Slam series tournaments and the 16th one at tournaments under the auspices of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), BelTA has learned.
In the final match of the U.S. Open the second racket of the planet defeated the world ranking’s number six Jessica Pegula from the USA - 7:5, 7:5.
These finals were Aryna Sabalenka’s fourth ones at the Grand Slam tournaments. Now her record contains two victories at the Australian Open (2023, 2024) and another victory at the U.S. Open just now. On her way to the final match the 26-year-old Belarusian defeated Australia’s Priscilla Hong (number 203 on the WTA ranking), Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti (76), Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova (31), Belgium’s Elise Mertens (35), China’s Qinwen Zheng (7) and USA’s Emma Navarro (12), who knocked out Corey Gauff in the 1/8 finals.
In the deciding match of the men’s tournament the number one player on the world ranking Jannik Sinner from Italy will play against the USA’s Taylor Fritz (12).
The total prize pool of this year’s U.S. Open tournament makes up a record high of $75 million. Winners of the men’s and women’s singles will earn $3.6 million each.
