MINSK, 24 May (BelTA) – Two-time Olympic champion Yekaterina Karsten has got her Olympic berth for the seventh time, BelTA has learned.
At the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland the Belarusian finished third in the Women’s Singles Sculls clocking 7:25.940. Yekaterina Karsten was behind Emma Twigg of New Zealand (7:21.870) and Sanita Puspure of Ireland (7:24.760). Rio 2016 berths were received by four best athletes in the final race.
“The final race went very well. Ahead of the start in Lucerne I hoped for the Olympic place. This is sport, however, and everything could happen,” Yekaterina Karsten said to the International Rowing Federation.
The Summer Olympics in Rio will be the seventh games for the Belarusian. The first Olympics Yekaterina Karsten took part in was in Barcelona in 1992 where she claimed bronze. The Belarusian won gold medals in Atlanta and Sidney, silver in Athens and bronze in Beijing. She was fifth in London in 2012.
