MINSK, 24 August (BelTA) – The Belarusian women’s team claimed silver at the 2015 FIBA 3x3 U18 European Championships that took place in Minsk, Belarus on 21-23 August. In the final Belarus lost to Hungary 15-16 in overtime, BelTA informs.
The two teams opened the championships on 21 August, with Belarus taking a solid 15-7 victory. In the gold medal game the teams needs extra time to decide the winner. Mistakes in defense held Anna Lapo, Maria Adashchik, Maria Ivanenko and Anastasia Sushchik outplay one of the world’s strongest teams for the second time in three days.
Bronze went to Israel that beat France 16-12.
The Belarusian men’s team finished fourth beating Belgium 21-15 in the quarterfinal and losing 9-20 to France in the semifinal. In the bronze medal game Belarus could not resist to Spain losing 15-18 in the overtime. Turkey claimed gold beating France 16-14 in the final.
The 2015 FIBA 3x3 U18 European Championships became the first kind of the tournament held under the auspices of the International and European basketball Federations. The FIBA-Europe representatives praised the organization of the tournament in Minsk and assured the Belarusian Basketball Federation that Belarus may be given the right to host a bigger basketball tournament.
