MINSK, 16 March (BelTA) – Belarusian athletes won 12 medals at the European Open, Juniors and Sub-Juniors Classic Powerlifting Championship in Tartu, Estonia, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Sport Society Dinamo.
Belarus clinched seven gold, three silver and two bronze medals. In the women’s U18 event Alina Chashchina (43kg), Tatyana Domashina (47kg) and Alexandra Burykina (63kg) claimed gold medals in their weight categories and set five new European records. In the U23 contest gold went to Marina Shostachuk (43kg) and Viktoria Makarevich (72kg). Silver medals were collected by Violetta Kudrevich (43kg), Olga Yermolitskaya (47kg) and Snezhana Zubko (85kg). The Belarusian junior team placed first ahead of the UK and Russia in the overall team standings.
Artyom Savelyev won the men’s U18 59kg event and set new world and European records. In the 105kg contest Vladislav Papelsky set a new European record and claimed gold with the total of 637.5kg. Bronze went to Konstantin Shabunevich (59kg; U18) and Yuri Shakun (74kg; U18).
The European Classic Powerlifting Championship in Tartu has become the biggest success for Belarus since 1994. Partaking in the competitions were 359 athletes from 24 countries.
