MINSK, 7 May (BelTA) – Team Belarus defeated Team USA 5-2 to top Group B at the ongoing 2015 IIHF World Championship, BelTA has learned. It is the first victory over the United States in the history of the Belarusian hockey.
Belarus’ goalie Kevin Lalande stood high in the opening period keeping the opponents away from the goal in an action where Belarusians saw themselves outshot 13-7.
Three goals in the second period dictated the outcome for the game against Americans. Artur Gavrus, Artyom Volkov, and Alexander Kitarov gave Belarus a 3-0 lead. Alexei Kalyuzhny added two more to nail down Belarus’ success.
Brock Nelson and Torey Krug were the ones to provide some response for Team USA.
Previously, Belarus and the United States met at various tournaments, including the Olympic Games and the World Championship, seven times, and the United States celebrated the victory in all of them.
Currently, Belarus keep 10 points after three wins over Slovenia (4-2), Denmark (5-1) and the United States (5-2), and 1-2OT defeat from Slovakia.
Belarus will next play Russia on 9 May.
