MINSK, 6 October (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia have established a transboundary nature reserve Zapovednoye Poozerye, BelTA learned from Yelena Meleshkova, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry.
During the third session of the CIS Interstate Ecological Council Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Minister Andrei Khudyk and Russian Natural Resources and Ecology Minister Sergei Donsky signed a Belarusian-Russian intergovernmental agreement on creating the transboundary nature reserve Zapovednoye Poozerye.
The agreement was signed to unite efforts of the two countries with a view to preserving the unique biological and landscape diversity of the lake districts in Vitebsk Oblast and Russia’s Pskov Oblast. The nature reserve Zapovednoye Poozerye comprises the national park Sebezhsky (in Russia’s Pskov Oblast) and the Belarusian landscape reserves Krasny Bor and Osveisky.
The establishment of the nature reserve Zapovednoye Poozerye will allow improving cooperation in environmental protection, scientific research, the preservation of biological diversity, the promotion of ecological awareness, and the development of environmental tourism. A Belarusian-Russian commission will be set up to coordinate the implementation of the agreement.
