CHISINAU, 18 April (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has laid a wreath at the Stephen the Great Monument in Chisinau, Moldova, BelTA informs.
One of the symbols of the capital and the country, the bronze monument to Stephen the Great is located in central Chisinau.
Designed by Moldovan architect Alexandru Plamadeala, the monument was erected in April 1928 near the main entrance to the city park of the same name in Stefan cel Mare Avenue, next to the Great National Assembly Square. The design is said to be based on a miniature dated 1475. The monument has been relocated to Romania twice. In 1945, it became one of the first monuments restored in the post-war Chisinau.
Stephen the Great ruled Moldavia from 1457 to 1504. He strengthened the central government, actively fought for the country’s independence, and successfully confronted the ambitions of the Ottoman Empire, Poland, and Hungary. Being a talented commander and diplomat, Stephen the Great managed to maintain Moldova’s independence and turn it into a significant actor in Eastern Europe back in the day.
