MINSK, 22 August (BelTA) - Belarus finished 40th in the medal table at the 2016 Rio Olympics, BelTA has learned.
Belarus ended the Games with nine medals. Vladislav Goncharov claimed the Olympic champion title with gold in trampolining. Silver medals were brought to Belarus by weightlifters Darya Naumova and Vadim Streltsov, Maria Mamoshuk (wrestling), Ivan Tikhon (athletics). Bronze medals were won by wrestlers Javid Hamzatov and Ibragim Saidov, swimmer Aleksandra Gerasimenya and K4 team of Margarita Makhneva, Nadezhda Lepeshko, Olga Khudenko and Marina Litvinchuk.
The most successful Olympics for Belarus were the 2008 Beijing Games where the country won 18 (four gold, five silver and nine bronze medals) medals. Belarus claimed 15 (1, 6, 8) medals at Atlanta Games 1996, 17 (3, 3, 11) medals at Sydney 2000, 13 (2, 5, 6) medals at Athens 2004, and 12 (2, 5, 5) medals at London 2012.
The United States topped the medal table with 121 (46 gold, 37 silver and 38 bronze) medals. Second finished the UK with 67 (27, 23, 17) medals. China won a total of 70 (36, 18, 26) medals to place third.
