MINSK, 4 August (BelTA) – The National Research Center for Pediatric Surgery has performed a procedure to implant an artificial heart ventricle in a four-year-old patient, BelTA informs citing the press service of the Healthcare Ministry.
According to Director of the National Research Center for Pediatric Surgery Konstantin Drozdovsky, the little patient was on the waiting list for a heart transplant, but her condition deteriorated. The patient was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, she developed other complications and weighed 13 kg, thus, it was impossible to transplant a donor organ.
The only chance to save the child was the implantation of an artificial ventricle. The procedure was associated with some difficulties, but the post-surgery period is proceeding well so far.
The operating team was headed by chief consultant for pediatric cardiac surgery of the Healthcare Ministry Konstantin Drozdovsky. He was assisted by a well-known cardiac surgeon from Türkiye, Dr. Umit Kervan.
This is one of the rarest and most complex surgeries in Europe. It was a second surgery of this kind in Belarus. The first surgery was conducted on a six-year-old patient in 2022.
