Belarus claims place in Fed Cup World Group II

MINSK, 22 April (BelTA) – Belarus defeated Japan 3-2 in Tokyo to reach the Fed Cup World Group II, BelTA has learned.

Victoria Azarenka and Olga Govortsova teamed up in the decisive doubles to down Shuko Aoyama and Ayumi Morita 6-3 6-4.

Victoria Azarenka (World No.32) downed Japan No. 1 Kurumi Nara (54) 6-3 6-3 in the opening singles match on Sunday. Alexandra Sasnovich fell to veteran Ayumi Morita 6-7(5-7) 6-4 4-6.

Victoria Azarenka defeated Misaki Doi (107) 6-1, 6-2 while Olga Govortsova (136) lost to Kurumi Nara 4-6, 6-4, 2-6.

Belarus had the same lineup in Bucharest in early February 2015 to have a successful first Fed Cup qualification round earning the right to fight for the spot in World Group II against Japan. The Belarusian team beat Georgia (3-0), Bulgaria (3-0), Portugal (2-1), and the UK (2-0) in the Hungarian capital.
