MINSK, 8 January (BelTA) - The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) and Alferov's Foundation for Support of Education and Science have announced the winners of the 2017 contest of young scientists, BelTA learned from the NASB press service.
Alexander Mikhalychev, a senior research associate at the NASB Institute of Physics, received an award in physics, mathematics, informatics, physical and technical sciences in recognition of his research “New methods in quantum information science”. This series of works dedicated to quantum information science, one of the most rapidly developing fields of today’s science, comprises 17 magazine articles, 23 publications in article collections, and 26 theses. They feature the fundamental results obtained by the author, which greatly expand the potential of quantum information processing and communication methods. These results have been published in top-rated international science magazines and reported by the author at famous international forums. They have already been put into practice under several international projects at the NASB Institute of Physics.
Yevgeny Bondarenko, a junior research associate of the Faculty of Chemistry at Belarusian State University, earned an award in biology, chemistry, medicine, agrarian Sciences, and Earth sciences in recognition of his research “Effect of giant photocurrent quantum yield in electrochemical processes on nanostructured semiconductor bismuth oxysulfide films”.
The diplomas will be awarded to the winners on behalf of the organizers on the eve of the Belarusian Science Day. The award for each nomination totals $2,500 expressed in Belarusian rubles.
The fourth edition of the contest took place in 2017. Individuals and groups comprising no more than three members are entitled to participate in the competition. Their works are evaluated by the NASB Commission on Prizes which includes big-name scientists. The NASB and Alferov’s Foundation instituted the award for research projects and inventions of value for fundamental and applied science on 5 June 2014 to encourage young Belarusian scientists under 35. The initiative was put forward by Zhores Alferov, a Nobel Prize winner, Vice President and member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a foreign member of the NASB.
