MINSK, 10 August (BelTA) – Young Belarusian geologists ranked third at the first International Field Olympiad of Young Geologists that took place in Kemerovo, Russia from 31 July from 9 August, BelTA learned from the website of the Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry.
This wass the first time Belarusian school students had taken part in a geology olympiad at such a high level. The team comprised 10 members (students of Minsk Secondary School No. 53 and two coaches). They claimed first place in the categories Description of the Geological Monument, Geological Report, and Radiometry; second place in the competitions Geological Route, Paleontology, and Heavy Mineral Sampling; and also third place in Hydrogeology. The Belarusian team placed third in overall ranking.
The popularity of the geology movement has been growing among children and young people in the CIS in recent years. In February 2017, the Federal Subsoil Resources Management Agency at the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment invited Belarus to partake in the 11th All-Russian Open Field Olympiad of Young Geologists and the first International Field Olympiad of Young Geologists. The Belarusian school students prepared for the competition with support from the Geology Institute affiliated with the R&D Center for Geology, the Faculty of Geography at Belarusian State University, and the R&D institute Belgorkhimprom.
