MINSK, 5 July (BelTA) – World No. 683 Victoria Azarenka ousted No.16 Russian Yelena Vesnina 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 38 minutes to reach the Wimbledon third round. Azarenka extended her head-to-head record against Vesnina to 8-0.
In the next round Victoria Azarenka will face local heroine Heather Watson.
Another Belarusian tennis player, world No. 136 Arina Sobolenko lost a second-round match to German Carina Witthoft 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 3-6.
Belarusian Lidiya Marozava and Dutch Lesley Kekhove defeated the Russians Alla Kudryavtseva and Alexandra Panova 6–2, 4–6, 7–5 in the women’s doubles opener.
Wimbledon will see some other Belarusians in Men’s Doubles. Max Mirny/Marcin Matkowski will face Max Schnur/Hsieh Cheng-Peng (US/China). Andrei Vasilevsky/Gans Podlipnik-Castillo (Belarus/Chile) will play against Scott Lipsky/Francis Tiafoe (US). Alexander Bury/Ariel Behar (Belarus/Uruguay) will compete with Marcus Daniell/Marcelo Demoliner (New Zealand/Brazil).
