MINSK, 3 September (BelTA) – Two Belarusian tennis players celebrated victories at the start of the US Open doubles event, BelTA has learned.
Victoria Azarenka and Sofia Kenin of the United States defeated the Australian duo of Ellen Perez and Storm Sanders 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and 30 minutes.
Aryna Sabalenka and Belgium’s Elise Mertens needed just 50 minutes to see off the Australian-U.S. tandem of Arina Rodionova and Sabrina Santamaria 6-2, 6-0.
On 3 September world number 11 Aryna Sabalenka and Victoria Azarenka, ranked 27 in the world, will face each other in round two. This will be their second head-to-head encounter. In the first round of the US Open 2019 Aryna Sabalenka beat Victoria Azarenka 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Belarus’ world number 130 Olga Govortsova will face world number 39 Sloane Stephens of the United States in the second round.
On 4 September world number 106 Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus will play Kazakhstan’s world number 35 Yulia Putintseva, who defeated Belarus’ world number 351 Vera Lapko 6-3, 6-3.
The US Open in New York, with the total prize pool of $53.4 million, will complete on 13 September.
