MINSK, 26 August (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number 59 Victoria Azarenka dismissed France’s world number 60 Alize Cornet 6-4, 7-5 to reach the Western & Southern Open quarterfinal in New York, BelTA has learned.
The match lasted for two hours. Earlier, the Belarusian saw off France’s world number 49 Caroline Garcia 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) and Croatia’s world number 24 Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-3. Victoria Azarenka will next face world number 39 Ons Jabeur of Tunisia.
In the doubles round of 16 Victoria Azarenka and U.S. Sofia Kenin lost to the Russian duo of Anna Blinkova and Veronika Kudermetova 1-6, 6-4, 8-10.
Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka, ranked 11th in the world, lost to U.S. world number 83 Jessica Pegula 2-6, 6-2, 3-6 in the round of Last 16. In the doubles event Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens of Belgium saw off the American tandem of Bernarda Pera and Ann Li 6-2, 6-4. Sabalenka and Mertens reached the quarterfinal defeating the American-Chilean duo of Alexa Guarachi and Desirae Krawczyk 6-1, 6-2.
