MINSK, 3 June (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number 16 Victoria Azarenka defeated 18-year-old world number 90 Clara Tauson of Denmark 7-5, 6-4 to move into the Roland Garros third round, BelTA has learned.
In the first round the Belarusian solved Russia’s world number 40 Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Victoria Azarenka will next play world number 24 Madison Keys of the United States.
Belarus’ world number 4 Aryna Sabalenka advanced into the Roland Garros third round after beating fellow Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich (World No.103) 7-5, 6-3.
Aryna Sabalenka saw off Croatia’s world number 144 Ana Konjuh 6-4, 6-3 in the opener, while Aliaksandra Sasnovich fought past France’s world number 307 Diane Parry 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
In the doubles opener Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk will take on the Latvian-Romanian duo of Jelena Ostapenko and Monica Niculescu.
The second Grand Slam tournament of the season will be over in Paris on 13 June. The total prize money at Roland Garros for 2021 comes in at €34.3 million. The winner in Paris men’s and women’s singles will receive €1.4 million each.
