Azarenka named March’s WTA Player of the Month

MINSK, 8 April (BelTA) – Victoria Azarenka has been named WTA Player of the Month for March, according to the results of the poll conducted by the WTA website, BelTA has learned.

During the first spring month of 2016 the Belarusian player won two prestigious tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami to climb up to the 5^th spot in the WTA and top this season’s champion race. 70% of voters cast their votes for Victoria Azarenka.

The final results for March's WTA Player of the Month are as follows:

1. Victoria Azarenka (70%)

2. Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia (17%)

3. Serena Williams of the United States (13%).

In the Indian Wells final Victoria Azarenka beat Serena Williams. In Miami the Belarusian was too strong for Svetlana Kuznetsova. Other 2016 WTA Player of the Month winners were Angelique Kerber in January and Carla Suarez Navarro in February.

Next week (16-17 April) the Belarusian national team will hold its playoff match against Russia for the place in the Fed Cup World Group. Belarus’ team captain Eduard Dubkov named Victoria Azarenka, Olga Govortsova (99^th in the WTA), Alexandra Sasnovich (100^th) and Arina Sobolenko (257^th) for the national team of Belarus. Vera Lapko (658^th) will also train with the team.

Russia’s team captain Anastasia Myskina included Darya Kasatkina (35^th), Margarita Gasparyan (47^th), Yelena Vesnina (85^th) and Yelizaveta Kulichkova to the roster for the match.
