MINSK, 31 July (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number 20 Victoria Azarenka edged out world number 97 Hailey Baptiste of the United States, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3), to advance to the second round of the Mubadala Citi DC Open, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian needed two hours and 25 minutes to progress further in the tournament. Victoria Azarenka will next face China’s world number 73 Wang Yafan for a spot in the quarterfinal.
Belarus’ world number 3 Aryna Sabalenka will kick off her Washington campaign against Russia’s world number 105 Kamilla Rakhimova in the second round.
The Mubadala Citi DC Open will be over on 4 August. The winner will earn $142,000 and 500 points. Last year the tournament was won by Coco Gauff of the United States, who is currently competing at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
