GRODNO, 10 June (BelTA) - New recreation areas, bike lanes and hiking routes will be developed in the Augustow Canal, BelTA learned from Deputy Director for Sport and Tourism at the Grodno District Executive Committee Tatyana Lidyayeva.
The tourism potential of the Augustow Canal was discussed at a working meeting hosted by the Grodno Oblast governor. It is planned that new recreation areas for tourists will be set up on the canal itself and within its surroundings, for example, near the estate and park complex in the village of Radzivilki.
“The popularity of the Augustow Canal as a recreation area is growing. Infrastructure is constantly improved and additional conditions for tourists are created. Today there are more than ten tourist routes within the canal area, including cycling, hiking and water routes. We plan to build several more,” Tatyana Lidyayeva said. The pedestrian route will be set up in the vicinity of the village of Nemnovo, and a bike route will be built towards the memorial to border guards in the village of Dorgun. Clean-up works will be held near some bunkers located in the forests near the canal.
The renovated tourist information center in the village of Sopotskin will help tourists select a route. It also runs a bike rental and service. Tourists can also rent a bicycle near the Dombrovka sluice and the village of Nemnovo. All in all, more than 100 bicycles are available to travelers, including children's, women's and electric bikes.
The information about the opening hours of rental and service outlets, contacts of agricultural farms and other necessary information for tourists is available on the website of the Augustow Canal.
