GRODNO, 28 December (BelTA) – The Augustow Canal will become more attractive for tourists, Chairman of the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee Vladimir Kravtsov said at a press conference, BelTA has learned.
The Augustow Canal will be upgraded by the new tourist season. Its tourism infrastructure will become more accessible to both Belarusian and foreign visitors. "This is, first and foremost, about giving the new status to the border checkpoint Lesnaya-Rudawka located on the Augustow Canal. It was a water border checkpoint. Now it will be made accessible to hikers and cyclists,” said Vladimir Kravtsov.
The change in the status is just the first step in raising the popularity of the canal among foreign tourists. There are plans to create a zone for visa-free entry similar to the one applied in Belovezhskaya Pushcha.
The plans also include the development of infrastructure: a network of bicycle tracks, walking trails, leisure and catering sites, and a museum of the Augustow Canal. There will be a place for extreme sports at the canal as well. By the way, thanks to the cross border cooperation program the reconstruction of the road from Grodno to the Augustow Canal will be completed, Vladimir Kravtsov noted.
"Another important water body is the lake on the Neman River in the vicinity of the Grodno hydroelectric power station. This year we did cleaning, and plan to improve the shoreline," added Vladimir Kravtsov. It is expected that the lake will become a holiday destination not only for residents of Grodno and Mosty districts but also for tourists from other regions.
