MINSK, 4 January (BelTA) – Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (13) is through to the Shenzhen Open semifinals after she defeated Russian Maria Sharapova (29) on 4 January, BelTA informs.
Aryna Sabalenka won the first set 6-1. Maria Sharapova was forced to retire in the second set due to injury (4-2). The two had previously met in the Tianjin Open final in October 2017, with Maria Sharapova, a more experienced player, prevailing. Sabalenka will face the winner between Romanian qualifier Monica Niculescu (99) and China’s Wang Yafan (70) for a spot in the Shenzhen final.
On the same day, another Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich (30) lost to Croatian Donna Vekic (34) in the quarterfinal of Brisbane International.
