Year of Historical Memory: Belarus gearing up for Victory Day
5 May 2022

Victory Day is approaching. The Victory in the Great Patriotic War became the most long-awaited and joyful event for people exhausted by the war. On 28 July 1944, the 61st Army backed by the 70th Army and 28th Army drew the enemy out of Brest completing the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders. ... The document on the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany in World War II came into force at 22:43 on 8 May (00:43 on 9 May in the Soviet Union).

In the run-up to the holiday, meetings with veterans, participants and witnesses of that terrible war are held all over Belarus: young generations hear firsthand accounts of heroism on the battlefield. On 28 April, a ceremony was held in Minsk on the occasion of the Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day to commemorate the Jews killed by the Nazis and to honor the descendants of the Righteous Among the Nations who followed the covenant “Whosoever saves a single life, saves an entire universe”.

In May the country launched a patriotic relay race “Belarus Remembers. We Remember Everyone” that started at the symbol of Victory - the T-34 tank in Minsk. Taking part in it are schoolchildren and students, people of culture and art, journalists. Museums also supported the Victory marathon: on 4 May the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War History presented the exhibition “For Bravery, Fortitude and Courage”, and on 5 May the Grodno State Museum of History and Archeology hosted an exposition about the genocide of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War.

The reenactment of the battles is also impressive! The Proryv [Defense Advancement] memorial complex hosted a patriotic event dedicated to the 78th anniversary of the advancement into Ushachi District by partisans of the Polotsk-Lepel zone during the Great Patriotic War.

The Minsk hero city is gearing up to mark the 77th anniversary of the Great Victory in all the splendor of blooming May. The program is packed. Every day the country will be holding a great many touching events to celebrate those who paid the greatest price for this Victory.
