Unusual places in Belarus: Augustow Canal
23 May 2016

Augustow Canal, the unique hydraulic engineering installation of the 19th century, famous artificial water artery in Europe and one of the most beautiful attractions of Belarus and Poland, welcomed a new tourist season.

The first summer event was the folk art festival Augustow Canal Gathers Friends. Hundreds of tourists gathered near the Dombrovka Sluice on 21 May to enjoy the fest. The program featured the performances of Grodno Oblast best cultural collectives, beautiful folk pageant, an arts and crafts fair, Belarusian pavilions offering delicious dishes of national cuisine. Every summer the enthusiasts of adventure sports have an opportunity to travel on board the Neman motor ship, ride a catamaran or a kayak, and cycle around the Augustow Canal Park.

A special gift for the summer season 2016 was the opening of the Augustow Canal Museum in the renovated Dombrovka Sluice caretaker’s house.

The participants of the second Belarus-Polish tourism forum got together to discuss the joint brand "the Augustow Canal". It is not accidental. The tourist gem on the border of three countries – Belarus, Poland and Lithuania – has long become a place of the most fascinating cultural and sporting events. The international cycling marathon "Neighbors" along the shores of the canal was traditionally held in July. In August the festival the Augustow Canal in Three Cultures will welcome fans of swamp soccer and Anything That Floats Race.
