Although winter is still in full force in Belarus (-20C with blizzards last week), greenhouses across the country are gearing up for the upcoming International Women’s Day.
Traditionally the top gifts for 8 March are spring flowers of all kinds and shades: roses, tulips, gerbera daisies, mimosa, daffodils, and lilies. By the way, Belarusian florists have been gearing up for the holiday since as early as October. Back then, they planted flowers to cut them in early spring.
For instance, specialists of the Brest-based utility Kommunalnik have grown around 30,000 tulips, 10,000 roses, 1,000 daffodils, 3,000 hyacinths, and some 2,000 cinerarias. Tulips alone come in three or four colors: red, yellow, and white. Specialists say that mixed yellow-violet flower bouquets are especially popular.
